Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner!! Get ready for the big game with some DIY decorations for one of the biggest party days of the year!
Congrats if you happen to be lucky enough to have your favorite team competing in the Super Bowl! If that’s the case, you may be stocked and ready with decorations for a Super Bowl Party. For everyone else…. maybe you’re team didn’t make it this year, maybe you’re not even a fan of football… Either way, you’re still probably watching the game … you can’t miss the commercials!! …. and it’s a great excuse to throw a party! I have found, however, that it’s surprisingly hard to find great party decorations for a Super Bowl party. OK.. sure, you can buy that plastic football field tablecloth and call it a day, but c’mon! … dont’ you want to be more creative than that?! I’m here to help! 🙂
Here are some fun Team Color Pennant Flags that are so simple to make. They can be made in any team color… Whether you stand these in a vase to decorate a table or buffet… or hand them out to your fans to route for their teams… these are a unique way to get into that Super Bowl spirit!!
What you’ll need:
- Fat Quarters of Fabric in the team colors of your choice
- Double Fold Bias Tape Binding (I used .875″ wide)
- Ultra Firm Fusible (I used Pellon Peltex 71F Single-Sided Fusible Ultra Firm Stabilizer)
- Cardstock
- 1/4″ wooden dowels – Cut to size (mine vary from 18″ – 22″). If you don’t have a saw, pick these up at Lowe’s or Home Depot, and they will cut them for you.
- Scissors
- Iron
- Thread in team colors
The following instructions are for one flag. Repeat steps 3-12 for each flag.
1. Cut a pennant shape pattern from the cardstock – this is for the fabric flag. Mine measured 5 1/2″ high along the flat edge, and 11″ long across the center of the flag from the edge to the point
2. Cut a second pattern the same shape as the pennant, but 1/8-1/4″ smaller all around – this is for the fusible.
3. Using the Flag pattern, cut two pieces of fabric
4. Using the Fusible pattern, cut one piece of fusible
5. Follow the package directions for your fusible, and adhere it to the wrong side of one of the fabric flag pieces
6. Put wrong sides together, and pin, ensuring that your edges align
7. Sew along all 3 edges with a 1/4″ tolerance
8. Cut a length of binding 6 1/2″ long
9. Insert the flat edge of the flag into the open fold of the binding – the binding should be folded over either side of the flag
10. Sew a straight line along the innermost edge of the binding, leaving the top and bottom open
11. Trim the ends of the binding to match the edge of the flag
12. Insert the dowel into the bottom opening of the binding
Enjoy!!!
