There’s no shortage of great ideas that can come from thrift shopping! What there is a shortage of is beautiful black cake stands…. OK, maybe at Halloween you’ll see some, but what about all other times of the year? Few and far between. Believe me – I look! For those of us that enjoy a little darkness in our lives 365 days a year, we’re shit out of luck! Just because we like to wear black doesn’t mean we don’t want to put out a nice display when we have company.. am I right?
I have so many awesome cake stand ideas that I’ll be bringing to you over time… but for today’s trash to treasure project, I thought I’d share this black & gold beauty! I was lucky enough to find this candle holder while at a thrift store, and it was already black & gold! I didn’t want to mess with a good thing, so I left the colors as is. I actually thought the gold brought out all of the cool decorative lines!
If you’re not lucky enough to find one like this… any candlestick with some carved details will do….
Paint the Candlestick Black
Rub small amounts of Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff Wax over the areas you want gold. A little really goes a long way. You can cover a surface gold, or just highlight the raised edges.
To turn this into a cake stand, I purchased an 8″ round wooden plaque painted it black, and secured it to the candle base using E6000 glue. Such an easy project.. with a gorgeous result!
I will warn you… it’s not safe to put food directly on a painted surface… but grab a black doily and problem solved.
So…. keep an eye out for those cool candlesticks when you’re out garage saling or thrift shopping.. and stay tuned for more Trash to Treasure inspiration… I plan to bring you at least one new idea each week! Can’t wait for more? Try your hand at this Rockstar Lazy Susan…. or this Black Domed Cheeseboard.
And by the way… if you’re not the baking type… this cake stand looks just as good as a pedestal for your dark decor! 🙂
