It’s official…. Halloween merchandise is out in stores!! It might only be August but all of these skulls on the shelves have me devilishly giddy! So, I decided to change it up a bit this week in honor of the beginning of Halloween. I’m putting my black paint away, and breaking out my black apron instead…. It’s time for some Skull Cookies!
A couple years ago I put a skull patterned rolling pin on my Christmas list… was thrilled to discover my husband had picked one out for me…. and then I put it in a kitchen drawer and forgot about it…UGH! I do that way too often, and am trying to make a better habit of using the things I buy or receive… So recently, I started digging through my drawers to see what gadgets I had forgotten about, and found a treasure trove! I’m pretty excited to have found so many fun things to play with in my kitchen… especially now that I can blog about it all! So I’m kicking it off with the rolling pin…
Make this simple 3 ingredient Shortbread Cookie dough and let the rolling pin do all of the work for you! These skull cookies are the perfect treat all year long…. but with Halloween fast approaching, it’s an excellent time to show your skull love!

A quick side note… the pattern on some of these rolling pins is not cut very deep, meaning the impression on the cookie may be subtle. Make sure not to use self rising flour, or any cookie recipe with baking soda, because you don’t want the cookie to rise over the pattern while baking. In hindsight, I allowed my cookies to bake a bit longer than perhaps I should have… and the impression was not as crisp as I had hoped. Lesson learned… take the cookies out of the oven before they start to look brown, and be sure to give a firm press on the rolling pin when you’re rolling the dough! Next time I try these cookies, I’ll be sure to post an update with any tips I find to make the skulls stand out a bit more. But until then, I am still a fan of the subtle skulls on my shortbread!…. Subtle skulls are better than none!
UPDATE…. As I mentioned, I wasn’t thrilled with the imprint I got once these cookies were baked. I have since found a recipe for a cookie dough that maintains any design rolled into it…. It’s a Sugar Cookie Recipe that I used in both the Vanilla Skull Sugar Cookies, as well as the Halloween Stamped Almond Cookies. I still love the shortbread cookies, but for imprinted designs, the sugar cookie recipe is the way to go.
