Absinthe…. The mystery, the myths, and the intrigue surrounding this spirit is like no other. The lure likely stems from a combination of Absinthe’s tumultuous history and it’s unique, yet highly specific preparation ritual. Absinthe, commonly referred to as La Fee Verte (The Green Fairy) rose to popularity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By 1915, absinthe had been banned in the United States and in much of Europe due to it’s portrayal as a dangerously addictive psychoactive drug. Thujone, a compound present in Absinthe, and found in the grand wormwood (or Artemesia Abinthium – where Absinthe got it’s name) was blamed for the spirit’s alleged dangerous effects. In 2007, after almost a century of prohibition, the ban was overturned, and absinthe was legally imported and distilled in the United States. Today, though no longer considered a harmful drug, Absinthe still piques curiosities, still has a whisper of danger, and has a way of transporting you into the past. With it’s mystique and ritualistic nature, it is no surprise that absinthe often finds itself associated to many dark subcultures.
“Absinthe is the aphrodisiac of the self. The green fairy who lives in the Absinthe wants your soul. But you are safe with me.” ~Dracula by Bram Stoker

Delectables
The primary flavor of Absinthe is Anise, derived from both Star Anise and Fennel. A good absinthe will balance those with other medicinal and culinary herbs, resulting in the taste of licorice and herbal flavors. Whether you would like to try your hand at infusing those herbs yourself, incorporating other flavors and spirits into a unique absinthe cocktail, or just enjoy an Anise flavored confection…here’s a little something for everyone. Of course, we can’t forget one of the most important ingredients to a quality glass of Absinthe… the sugar cube. You may never want a basic cube of sugar after you see these!

Accoutrements
The basic, and most popular, ritual for preparing absinthe involves a sugar cube atop a perforated spoon placed on top of a glass filled partially with Absinthe. A fountain filled with ice water slowly drips onto the cube, dissolving it, and diluting the absinthe with the sugar and water. The tools involved in this ritual can range from exuberant to the most basic.. in both price and design, and while there are certainly hundreds of options, I have only chosen a few pieces that exemplify style but moderate prices. For those not interested in buying all of the accessories or performing the steps involved, there are a couple of tools that allow you to prepare a single glass of Absinthe with the same result, but far less hoopla.

Y.E. – Thank you for your comment! So glad you enjoyed the list! I’m jealous you have it so readily available! Absinthe seems to be a bit of a novelty in the bars in my area… I’ve resorted to purchasing my own collection of absinthe to try at home. Can be quite an expensive habit unfortunately!!
