December has always been a popular shopping time for me… but not for the reasons you’d assume. Of course there is the mad holiday rush for Christmas presents and supposedly amazing deals…. but I like to shop around this time of the year because the holidays bring some stylistic elements that I adore year round…. rich, luxurious textures, ornate patterns, and the color red… to name a few.
I’ve been slowly making a list of all of the things that I would recommend shopping for during the holidays. Things you might, at first glance, assume are only for Christmas, but actually compliment a darker aesthetic all year. Perhaps next Fall I’ll post that list so all of my readers can be prepared once the holiday goodies hit the shelves…. but in the meantime, that list inspired a project.
I came across these red plates while browsing a Christmas aisle. As a special bonus, they had a distressed crackle finish with black peering thru. It’s pretty easy to walk past red dishes on a Christmas aisle without batting an eye, so I’m glad I stopped to check these out. As soon as I saw them, I knew they were destined for something more! 🙂 Luckily you’ll find that red dishes seem to be a dime a dozen this time of the year!
Hosting is my jam, so I am constantly keeping an eye out for interesting serving pieces. And if I can’t find them, I make them! Even if you’re not the quintessential host.. it is the holidays, and ultimately there will be family or friends coming over, or you’ll be attending a holiday gathering. Why not serve in style? I decided to make a red and black dessert stand with my little red plate. Functional for all of those Christmas cookies, of course… but useful year round for so much more…. black candles and skulls perhaps? It’s always time for black candles and skulls, am I right?
If you’ve read my blog before, you may already know that I love to incorporate candlesticks into a lot of my projects. I collect them like crazy while out thrift shopping. In fact, one of these candlesticks may look familiar to you. A while back I transformed a few Hurricane Candle Holders into Black Serving Bowls. I had purchased three coordinating candle holders while out shopping at different thrift stores. Low & behold – I came across a 4th one in yet another store! This one didn’t have the hurricane glass like the others, but I still loved the shape! I also picked up a pair of the thick spiral candlesticks. I’m saving one for another projects, but thought this one was perfect for this stand. A quick note about selecting a candlestick… the top should have enough surface area to glue to a flat surface, and it should be sturdy enough to hold whatever you’ll be placing on top of the plates.
What you’ll need:
- Red Dessert Plate (Here is a similar one I found on Amazon)
- Candlestick
- Black Paint
- E6000 Glue
1. Clean and dry the plate and candlestick
2. Paint the candlestick. I used Black Gloss Spray paint.
3. Once Dry, using E6000 glue, secure the top of the candlestick to the base of the plate. Ensure the candlestick is centered.
4. Allow to sit for 24 hours
So easy!
And now that they’re done, you can use them all year long. Obviously, any sort of food could be served on them…. fruits for brunch, small cakes, appetizers. Or – think outside of the box, and use these as jewelry displays. I think piles of bangles look pretty good on display!
Curious what else you can do with those candlesticks? Make this Pedestal Cloched Cheeseboard or this Gothic Glam Fringed Cakestand
