I’ve always been a fan of “counting down the days” until any big event…. but there’s just something about counting down to Christmas that EVERYONE seems to get on board with. I remember always having some sort of countdown sign when I was little, so now that I have a little one of my own…. I decided to make my own Christmas Countdown sign.
Now, Annabel can count down the days until Santa arrives… meanwhile I may just be counting down the days I have left to shop, bake, decorate, wrap presents, throw parties…. ahhhh!!!… and oh yes, enjoy the days I have to sit by the fire next to the beautiful tree, drink eggnog, watch Christmas movies, sing Christmas Carols, and enjoy the spirit of Christmas!!
This sign was simple to make.
What You’ll Need:
- Wood Plaque or Board
- Foam Alphabet Stickers
- Chalkboard Frame
- Paint in 2 colors
- Paint Brushes – various sizes
- Painters Tape
- E600 Glue or Hot Glue
- Chalk
1. For the supplies….. I bought my Wood Plaque at Walmart in the craft department. I was looking for something deep enough to stand up on it’s own. The one I used measures 10 x 10 x 1 3/4″. A thinner board would work just fine if you wanted to hang it up on the wall, or prop it against something. When you buy your foam stickers, just make sure you have enough letters. I had to buy 2 packs because I needed an extra S. You can buy stickers in any color.. you’ll be painting them. I found a package of those chalkboard frames at Michaels. They came in a pack of 4. The paint I used was Waverly Chalk Paint in Crimson and Ivory.
2. Affix the letters to the board. I measured mine out first to ensure they were centered, as they can leave a bit of residue if you have to peal them up to re-affix too many times. Also make sure there is plenty of room for the chalkboard.
3. Paint the entire board in red paint. This includes the foam letters, and the sides of the board. I paint the letters to ensure the sides of each foam letter match the red of the board.
4. Paint the chalkboard frame in ivory. I used painters tape to tape off the chalkboard.
5. Once the board is dry, paint the face of the foam letters in Ivory. This takes some patience to ensure you don’t get the ivory paint on the red board. If you do, just use a very fine brush to touch up the red.
6. Using E600 or Hot Glue, affix the chalkboard to the board.
Let the countdown Begin!!
