I know what you’re thinking… cupcakes are for kids birthday parties. You are too cool, too edgy, too goth, too rock star, too whatever to be baking cupcakes. And even if you could get on board with a cupcake…. why on earth do you need a cupcake stand?
Presentation is everything!!! You can be the ordinary unimaginative vanilla girl who makes that vanilla cupcake with rainbow sprinkles and a sad white liner served on a plastic plate…. OR you can be the badass who straps on her skeleton apron (that’s right – I have one!!), bakes up an awesome black & red cupcake and serves it up on a black porcelain stand as if Dracula is your guest of honor. Which sounds better to you?
Unfortunately, there is a common society-wide misconception that only girly girls in pink aprons or PTA moms are baking cupcakes…. those sad vanilla cupcakes. That’s why, when you find cupcake stands in the store, they are almost always in Springtime colors or white. And while I agree that these companies are probably making wise colors choices for the majority of their customer base… time and time again… those of us who enjoy dark entertaining are left without a lot of options. I mean… maybe if you hold off until October, you’ll be able to find some black serving pieces… but does it bother anyone else that black home goods are considered Halloween decorations?? Seriously? I decided to take matters into my own hands!
I found these cupcake stands at Homegoods. They came in a 4 pack of pink porcelain ones for $9.99. See what I mean… of course they were pale pink!! When I first saw them, I thought to myself, these would be so cute in black. GIY time!! In my cart they went! It just so happens that after I finished working on these, I discovered that the Target Dollar Spot is carrying cupcake stands in their spring colors, and in a variety of shapes for $1 each!! That’s insane… so run to Target and grab some while they last!! I sent my husband over to my local Target to pick a few up for me, and he even called me to double check…. “Are you sure you want these?? They’re mint green and white!!” I love how well he knows me!! Do not worry about all of the pastel colors they come in.. We are going to fix that!!
Here’s the easy part…. I transformed these little stands with nothing more than a can of Black Gloss Spray Paint & Primer. Take your time… spray light layers.. let dry.. repeat. The last thing you want are drip marks so have patience!
While you always have to be careful when painting a surface that food may come into contact with… rest easy with these beauties. First of all… these are meant for cupcakes, and cupcakes almost always have liners.. so need need to worry about food touching the paint. BUT.. if you do have food that is going to sit directly on the stand, there are the cutest little Mini Black Doilies ready to save the day!
So… strap on your black apron… whip up some dark cupcakes…. and serve them in style!
If you’d like to recreate the cupcakes, I used a basic red cupcake liner set behind these Black Filigree Cupcake Wrappers. I topped them off with these Black Spiders…luckily you can find them year round at Amazon!
In the mood for more Dark Entertaining ideas?… then you’ll love this Ouija Serving Tray, this Rockstar Lazy Susan, or this Gothic Cake Stand!!
