Skulls… Yes! Chocolate… Yes! Black & White… Yes! A trifecta for a perfect Halloween treat…. Skull Cupcakes! So simple, yet so yummy!
These skulls may look familiar…. When Halloween merchandise first arrived on store shelves, I bought a few bags of small plastic skulls. I used several of the skulls to create these DIY Wine Bottle Stoppers. But I had a lot left over. I hate to waste anything, and wanted to find a fun way to use these skulls. Since I’ve been having so much fun baking lately, it was a no-brainer to use these to decorate some cupcakes.
Skull Toppers….
What you’ll need:
- Small Plastic Skulls
- White Spray Paint
- Awl
- Skewers (I used 4 1/2″)
- Plastic glove
- Black Food Coloring
1. Using the awl, puncture the base of each skull (ensure the sharp end of each skewer can be inserted through the hole)
2. Paint the skulls white
3. While the skulls dry, rub the skewers with the food coloring. I used a plastic glove to keep my fingers clean… (you’ll be handling the white skulls next, so you dont want black food coloring on your freshly painted white skulls)
4. Allow skewers to dry
5. Once the skulls and skewers are dry, insert the sharp end of the skewer into the hole you created in step 1
Black Cupcakes
I have two secret weapons when it comes to making black cakes…. Activated Charcoal Capsules, and Black Gel Food Coloring. So whether you have a special cake recipe, or just want to be lazy like I was this morning and buy a boxed cake mix and a can of frosting… I happened to use German Chocolate Cake & Frosting for this batch! … Open and sprinkle one capsule of the charcoal into the frosting, and one into the cake batter. Then I use a few squirts of the food coloring to get the black just right. It does not take much to do the trick!
I baked the cupcakes in white liners, and paired the finished cakes with a black filigree laser cut wrapper. Using a ziploc bag, I piped the frosting onto the cupcakes and topped with one of the skull toppers.
A ghastly treat to get you in the Halloween mood!
