So, you’re a total rocker… you have a closet full of black… you dig spikes and skulls… hard rock blares from your speakers. You invite your friends over for brunch… or taco night… or maybe just some snacks. When you look at your spread, is it still as rocker as you are? Probably not. Why? Because finding cool, edgy, dark things for a kitchen or for entertaining is nearly impossible.
I mean… you may have nabbed the occasional non cheesy Halloween piece, if you’re lucky. But if not, then you’re probably left with the same old boring Plain-Jane dishes…. Time to take matters into your own hands. Lucky for you.. creating rock star worthy entertaining pieces can be inexpensive and simple to make!
I especially love projects like this because it incorporates two of my favorite things… revamping a thrift store find and giving a new and unexpected purpose to something. I found these candle holders in a thrift store. If you’ve read my previous tutorials, you’ll know I love to pick up thrifted candle sticks and turn them into treasures. These were a bit different because they had the hurricane glass attached. Somewhat harder to come by, but I do find them every so often.
I’ve collected a handful over time, and for this project, decided to use 3 matching ones. Can you believe – I did not find all three in the same store! Goes to show how important it is to always keep your eyes open.. you never know when a matching set will find you!
So, here’s the easy part…..
What you’ll need:
- Hurricane Candle Holder
- Painters Tape
- Black Gloss Spray Paint
1. Clean the hurricane glass. Since these were likely used to hold candles, you’ll want to make sure there’s no residing wax
2. Using the tape, cover the entire glass. Take special care to run the tape exactly along the line where the glass meets the candlestick. You don’t want any paint to get on the glass, but you also don’t want to let any of the original candlestick color show thru.
3. Spray the candlestick. Take your time, and spray several layers lightly…. spray too heavily and you’ll end up with drip marks…. Do not make that mistake.. drip marks will make your project look cheap and homemade. I like using the high gloss paint for these… I just think it gives way more of a rocker vibe!
Now you’re ready to get creative. Could these still make beautiful candle holders? Sure. But c’mon… who hasn’t sprayed a candle stick with black paint before? Think outside of the box!

Another great idea and what luck, finding these in different charity shops! I might just get away with separate candlesticks and glasses.
