It is time for me to get into the kitchen and start working on the menu for my upcoming dinner party. For those of you that don’t already know, I’ve spent the past few weeks hard at work preparing for a party to honor witches and their craft. With Halloween and Samhain right around the corner, it seemed like a fitting time to host such a party. But a party is not a party without food, so this week I’m kicking it off with one of the desserts… Almond Crescent Moon Cookies.
True Confession…. this recipe was actually my grandmothers. I’ve been making these cookies since I was first able to put on an apron, and they’ve been a favorite of mine ever since. Seriously, these cookies are ridiculously good!! There was a risk of having no pictures for this article because I made the mistake of baking the cookies at night, and had to wait until morning to take pictures of them…. it was all I could do to not eat them all!!
Their crescent moon shape seemed to perfectly align with the theme of the dinner party, considering how heavily witches rely on the moon. Party or not, once you taste these cookies, you’ll be looking for any excuse to bake a batch!!
These cookies are so simple to make…. And only 6 ingredients! (Full recipe below)
- Mix the 1st five ingredients, and chill the dough for several hours or overnight.
- Once the dough has firmed, roll out to 3/8″-1/2″ high.
- Use a circular cookie cutter (a Circular Nested Set come in handy!), to cut a dough circle, and then use the same cutter to create a crescent shape.
- Bake.
- Dust with powdered sugar!
A few tips about these cookies:
- Make sure the cookies are warm when you cover them in powdered sugar… if they are too hot, the powdered sugar seems to melt, but if they are too cool, the sugar does not stick as well…
- My favorite method for covering the cookies in sugar is to place cooling racks over a deep baking tray… Place the cookies on the racks, and sift the powdered sugar. The baking trays will collect all of the excess powdered sugar. I then place each cookie in the baking trays, and carefully roll to coat. This seems to make the best use of the powdered sugar, while ensuring the entire cookie is coated
- Lastly, these cookies get better with age!! So feel free to make them ahead!!
