In the spirit of All Black Everything All of the Time… I bring you a shimmering Black Martini… Black Cherry to be exact. I mean… ’tis the season to drinkity drink, right? While a black martini looks chic all year long… add a bit of 24k gold, and kick it up a notch just in time for New Years Eve!
Years ago I started seeing images on Pinterest for Black Martinis, but finding the ingredients to make a truly black cocktail seemed to elude me. Most had a combo of dark juices that ultimately blended into a dark red cocktail, but some did list “black vodka” as an ingredient. I’ll tell you right now… finding Black Vodka is easier said than done! I discovered a black vodka online called Blavod. I went to liquor store after liquor store inquiring about this intriguing spirit, with no luck… for YEARS. I finally peaked the interest of a local liquor store manager this Fall when I told him it was a Halloween must have for his store. My new hero ordered several bottles, and I bought him out! At last I owned this evasive black vodka!
This is the first of hopefully many more blissfully black cocktail creations… but a word of warning.. even this self proclaimed black vodka is not as purely pitch black as I’d have hoped. And despite mixing with some dark mixers, there is still a red hue. I slipped a few drops of black food coloring into my shaker, and it did the trick.. If black dye is not your thing, leave au naturel, and you still end up with a beautifully dark blood resemblance.
As for the recipe, I went with a Black Cherry Martini…. a simple mix of black vodka, tart cherry juice, and cranberry-black cherry juice. It’s the holidays so it only seemed right to toss some pure gold into the mix. I used corn syrup to rim the glasses and then dipped them into gold sugar. I also topped each cocktail with Gold Cake Dust. I thought this gave a nice effect, but the tiniest bit of dust goes a LONG way, so be careful! Too much and you’ll have a solid layer of gold floating on your drink… looks pretty, but hard to drink! If you’re more of an All Black kind of drinker… or just simply looking for an everyday Gothic Martini… skip the gold, and use Black sugar instead! Perfectly spooky for a Halloween cocktail!
