I collect cake stands. To be fair, I collect all things entertaining! My cake stands are one of my favorite collections because they are so beautiful. I collect every shape, style, color! When I first found out I was pregnant with a baby girl, I picked up this beautiful pale pink porcelain stand. Surely, this would come in handy at a little girl’s birthday party! Fast forward to the planning of her 1st birthday party. The reality of having a 1 year old and the destruction she is capable of has set in!! That beautiful and breakable cake stand will have to wait for a more mature audience! To provide a suitable and unbreakable cake stand so my little girl could smash into that 1st cake without hesitation, I decided to make a wooden stand and paint it. These stands can be made in any color or size, so let your imagination run wild!
What you need:
- Wooden Base
- Wooden Top
- E600 Glue
- Paint
1. Start by finding a wooden base for your cake stand. To me, this is a treasure hunt. I shop in thrift stores or garage sales looking for wooden candle bases. You can certainly find bases at your local craft store (I found the natural wood one pictured at Michaels), but I prefer the thrill of the hunt. I always pick up a variety of shapes and sizes, and mix and match with the tops later. There are 2 things to remember when hunting for your base… 1 – the top of the base needs to have enough surface area to glue to a flat surface… and 2 – the base should be sturdy enough to hold both the top as well as the food you intend to place on it. You dont want this stand to be top heavy or your food will be on the floor!
2. Choose a Top. You can find these at your local craft stores. I picked up a few sizes and shapes from Michaels, and ordered a few from Amazon. They are called wooden plaques, if you’re searching.
3. Using E600, glue the base to the top. Let sit for 24 hours.
4. Paint. Dry…. It’s ready for your buffet!
